Born and raised in Baltimore, MD the second 2 born of 4 to parents that constantly pursued the quintessential "American Dream". On The Jeffersons type moving on up tip. A child of the desegregation of schools era. Lived in the same house in North West Baltimore yet attended 3 elementary school until half of 6th grade when we moved to another area. Surrounded by family, Grandmother and aunts and uncles lived directly across the street, and Great Aunt lived next door and the Motown Sound. In 2nd grade at the 'Jewish" school I was introduced to reading Charlie Brown and school plays. Found myself on stage as a dancer rat in the Pied Piper. My Dad was a military vet turned steel worker and my Mom was into computers, data processing . Sunday nights we watched television, Wild Kingdom and The Wonderful World of Disney. The notion to be a photographer and go to Africa seed was planted. We, cousins and young Aunt played house in Grandmother's backyard under the grapevine, which had the most delicious grapes ever, rode bikes, got excited when we heard the ice cream man bell and had to be in the house when the street lights came on. As a teen having discovered Black women writers thru my Aunt's Essence Magazine my passion for reading switched to all Black Writers was born. Always disinterested in the History class that was being taught, I, at a very young age found it hard to believe not one Black person rebelled against enslavement. So I turned off those history lesson. I found the rebellion I needed in books by Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Margaret Walker, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Nikki Giovanni and many many more. Once older sister discovered the R&B stations, my passion for music grew as did my desire to be a DJ. When posed with the question of what I wanted to be when I grew up?! There was never one answer. A Dj, a writer, a photographer. Til this day I am all these things and more. Living in Los Angeles and having discovered my roots thanks to African Ancestry my desire to do what I can for the advancement of the African diaspora and African Nation is amped all the way up. I am Mende from Sierra Leone!
